Effective Energy Management Reduction
Healthscope is committed to effectively managing and reducing our energy consumption.
The nature of Healthscope’s business requires us to artificially control the internal environment to obtain optimal comfort levels for our patients, staff and visitors. This means that a significant amount of our gas and electricity is used for heating, cooling and lighting.
From energy audits conducted by independent auditors on Healthscope facilities recently, we know that 62% of our electricity consumption can be attributed to temperature control and lighting, and a further 20% to catering and food storage.
We know also that 40% of our natural gas consumption is used for domestic hot water production, 35% for temperature control and 25% for catering.
Healthscope has therefore focused its energy efficiency efforts at temperature control in the first instance and has carried out upgrades of inefficient boilers and chillers at a number of hospitals over the last twelve months.
We will continue to initiate capital works and process-change where the focus is on a reduction in energy demand.
We have also installed ‘smart meters’ at all of our larger sites so that real-time data can be accessed and analysed.
